Candidate profile: Norm Hills

Norm Hills has spent a lot of his time working for committees, boards and departments for Marion. That’s something he says is an advantage.

Hills has spent time on the Planning Board, Master Plan subcommittee, Energy Management Committee, Conservation Commission, Capital Improvement Planning Committee and the Community Preservation Committee.

“I understand how the town operates,” he said. “It’s not like starting from scratch.”

When it comes to his goals as a selectman, Hills said he thinks some of the most important things to tackle are the waste water treatment plant permit issues, getting the Master Plan approved and implemented and taking care of people’s concerns about Route 6.

Hills thinks that back when the Buzzards Bay Coalition first raised the question about the leaks in the lagoons at the treatment plant, “the town should have been more aggressive with solving the problem.”

He also feels action finally needs to be taken with the Master Plan.

“We need to actually do something this time,” he said.

And when it comes to Route 6, Hills wants to figure out a way to make it a safer place for cyclists and pedestrians.

“There’s always controversy about speed and crossing the road” he said. “How do you calm the traffic down and make it more user friendly to things other than automobiles? It’s a major impediment for getting from one place to another without using a car.”

Hills, currently a member of the Energy Management Committee, cites the group’s success with getting the power purchase deal done with the windmills in Plymouth to save the town money as proof that he will proactively go after things that will make the town better.

“I guess I’m not just a warm body sitting in a chair,” he said. “…The key thing is the experience I’ve gained in working with people to get projects accomplished.”
