Candidates step up for Mattapoisett Finance Committee openings

Jun 12, 2013

The Finance Committee has had a deficit of members over the past year, but two people recently stepped forward with an interest in joining the group.

Currently the committee has two openings, which are selected by appointment.

Kevin Geraghty and Paul Amoruso came before Selectmen on Tuesday night to express their interest in the open seats.

Geraghty moved to Mattapoisett in November and came with extensive experience in town government, serving as a selectman for seven years as well as sitting on the Housing Authority Board in Sutton.

“I’m always interested in volunteering and helping out. I thought it would be a good way to get involved in the town in a constructive way,” said Geraghty.

Selectman Paul Silva asked about the use of free cash during Geraghty’s term on the select board. “Over the years, we greatly reduced the reliance on free cash. It’s still not zero,” he said.

He added that he was impressed with Mattapoisett’s financial status. “It seems like you’re way ahead of most towns,” said Geraghty.

While Geraghty is a newcomer to town with town government experience, Amoruso has been a resident for more than 30 years, but said he hasn’t held a position on any town boards yet.

“I’ve been a businessman for the past 45 years,” said Amoruso, who also helped organize the annual teen dances for 16 years with his wife. “I have a business sense of what we do and what we don’t do. Big budgets and things like that are things I’m used to. I’m interested in contributing to the town.”

Silva told the candidates. “It would be wonderful to have a full group there.”

Next, the two candidates will meet with the town moderator and chair of the School Committee.
