Carbon dioxide sensors to be installed at Mattapoisett Schools

Jan 15, 2013

Mattapoisett’s elementary schools will be getting new carbon dioxide sensors  in an effort to make the school safer.

Gene Jones, Facility Director for Old Rochester Regional schools, conducted a survey of Center School and Old Hammondtown School to assess the need.

“It would ease peace of mind,” said Jones.

Carbon dioxide emitted from a furnace, generator, and vehicles could affect the school’s air quality, he said.

Jones said that someone burning wood outside could even affect the school. “We draw fresh air from the outside to run through our systems,” he said.

Although there have not been any problems in the schools and sensors are not required by the state, Jones said it is a good thing to monitor the CO2 levels.

“It’s a low cost, easy to maintain piece of equipment,” he said. “It’s a safety precaution.”

To outfit the two schools with sensors costs around $2,800, said Jones.

The Mattapoisett School Committee voted unanimously to purchase 12 sensors for Old Hammondtown and 16 for Center School, according to Jones’ recommendation.
