Center School Clock Keeper seeks apprentice

Dec 3, 2012

Now that Center School’s historic clock is refurbished, Clock Keeper Ray Andrews is looking for someone to help him keep it ticking.

“One of my missions will be to train somebody to take over after I am no longer capable of doing it,” said Andrews, who was appointed Clock Keeper by Mattapoisett Selectmen in November.

Andrews spearheaded the restoration of the 1898 Seth Thomas Clock and worked closely with Balzer Family Clock Works, the company that got it back in working order and installed it this past summer.

In his 60s, Andrews hopes to continue maintaining the clock for at least 15 years, but said, “If I go on vacation or something, there should be someone who is ready that can be the assistant clock keeper.”

For upkeep, the clock needs to be oiled monthly and the time has to be monitored for accuracy. Andrews said the time commitment is minimal, although it’s easy to obsess over a few seconds off.

“That is the addictive part of it. It can be compulsive,” he said.

Andrews hopes to find someone who enjoys mechanics to be his apprentice. “It would be nice if I could find someone who went to Center School and who loves Mattapoisett and is as wacky about me as having a love of the clock.”

Andrews would like to see the position filled by next June when Balzer will return to work on the clock. For more information, contact Town Administrator Mike Gagne at 508-758-4100.

The clock will be open for tours on Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a rededication ceremony at 2 p.m. Please enter through the Council on Aging entrance.
