Center School to have 'traverse wall'
Soon, Mattapoisett kids will have the opportunity to navigate new paths in Center School.
On Monday night, the Mattapoisett School Committee voted to accept a donation of a “traverse wall” for the school's gym from the Somerset-based All Generations Fitness. Facilities Director Gene Jones said the wall is approximately three feet high, and is created for kids to cross horizontally.
The wall comes with mats that cover the wall when it is not in use, and are put on the floor to protect kids if they fall.
“If they fell, they wouldn’t be higher than 36 inches off the ground,” said Jones.
The gym at Old Hammondtown School already has a similar wall.
"They're pretty slick," said Jones.
With different routes outlined on the wall, Superintendent Doug White said there are creative ways to use the wall.
“It builds up body strength as well as problem solving skills,” said White.
Jones said the only cost for the school would be $1,863 to install the wall. The committee agreed to discuss the installation at a future meeting.
