Center School students perform Turkey Day play
Jennifer Aguiar’s first-grade students gave their parents a pint-sized performance of the first Thanksgiving at Center School on Tuesday.
One by one the students told a part of the story, starting with William and Mary Brewster’s decision to leave England. The students depicted the struggle of the voyage, the meeting of the Native Americans and how the first Thanksgiving came to be.
The Pilgrim Play has become a decade-long tradition for students in Aguiar’s class.
“The first class I did this with are now juniors in high school,” she said. “It’s a way for the kids to learn and really get involved in Thanksgiving.”
Aguiar also thinks it’s important for students to realize their proximity to such a monumental historical event.
“Many of the students don’t realize the first Thanksgiving happened thirty minutes away in Plymouth,” she said. “It’s important for them to know it happened right up the road.”
In addition to sharing the story of Thanksgiving, students also performed four turkey-themed songs.
