The Children’s Department of the Mattapoisett Library has officially turned to a new page.

Jeanne McCullough has taken over as children’s librarian for previous titleholder Linda Burke. Burke retired on June 30.

“It’s gone great so far,” McCullough reported.

McCullough worked part-time at the library for about four years, but prior to that did not have any library experience. She was originally a high school teacher, but left that career path when her children were born.

“I had not been involved in libraries at all, but I had actually taken a few classes toward a Master’s in library science,” she explained.

She started volunteering with Mattapoisett Library when her kids were young and going to Story Time, hosted at the time by Burke. The library had backpacks for each child, packed with books and puppets for Story Time.

“My son particularly loved to check those [backpacks] out,” McCullough said. “But one day we came in to get the packs and they were gone.”

Burke told McCullough that the bags were falling apart and the puppets were in disrepair. The library couldn’t afford to get them all fixed.

“I offered to put the packs back together,” McCullough said. “So I started volunteering then and helping out with special projects.”

Over the years, McCullough worked with Burke often, and said that experience has helped ease the transition.

“I’m lucky to have worked with [Burke] for so long,” she said. “I was fortunate to have so much time working with her to learn how the library works and how the department works. My transition has been smoother than it would have been if I didn’t have that opportunity.”

Despite the change in personnel, McCullough said library patrons shouldn’t expect much else to change.

“We’ve done so many great programs, so I will certainly continue with the great work [Burke] has started,” she said. “There will be little changes here and there, but I do hope to continue with what she did. It’ll be a little different, but a lot the same.”

McCullough also added that she’s excited to work with the families in Mattapoisett.

“We have the best patrons and best families,” she said. “They’re always so wonderful."
