Class of 2016 hits the red carpet for awards night
The unique qualities of the class of 2016 were celebrated at the Senior Superlative Gala, held Thursday at Old Rochester Regional High School. Hosted by Principal Mike Devoll and Athletic Director Bill Tilden, the annual red carpet event featured 29 categories from class angel to most artistic. Two winners were chosen for each award and given miniature Oscar-style trophies to celebrate their success.
“I’ve been doing this for seven years, and this is probably one of the best turnouts I’ve ever seen,” said Devoll. “This is such a great fundraiser for the senior class, and I’m so happy to see this many people in the audience.”
Prior to the award ceremony, seniors Abbi Morril and Matthew Fortin played games and held interviews with nominees on the red carpet, asking the much anticipated question: “So, what are you wearing tonight?”
Before the winners were announced, five nominees were called to the stage to play Devoll’s favorite trivia game, “Know Your School.”
Then it was time for the awards. The first trophies were for Most Spirited and were given to Brett Noone and Natasha Shorrock. Following their speeches, Evan Roznoy and Jane Kassabian received their trophies for being voted Most Likely To Succeed.
“Evan ‘Rosnoy’ would be happy to accept this award if he were here,” joked Roznoy, whose name was misspelled on the projector. He added,“I just want to say that all of the nominees were equally as deserving of this award as I am.”
Awards were also given out to “The Santi Twins,” William and Evan Santos, and Zoe Smith for Most Athletic; Bailey Sweet and Wiley Gibson for Class Angel; Abhlin Fitzpatrick and Nicolas Kondraki for Largest Appetite; and Abby Field and Emil Assing for Most Artistic.
In her acceptance speech for Most Unique in the senior class, Abigail Field proved herself worthy of the award by reciting the first two stanzas of Beowulf in old English.
Skinny Moth and The Prospect, comprised mostly of ORR students, provided musical entertainment during the brief intermission.
Following the intermission, Marco Li, an exchange student from Hong Kong, and Catherine Feldkamp, an ORR exchange student currently studying in Sweden, were awarded Most Likely to Move Far Away. Ironically, neither one of them were in town at the time to receive their award.
Other categories included Cutest Couple, Best Hair, Class Flirt, Highway Menace, Most Changed, Celebrity-Look-Alike and Teacher’s Pet.
“I don’t really see myself as a teacher’s pet,” says Matthew Fortin, in his acceptance speech for the award, “but, Ms. Graser, if you’re out there, just know that I love you and you’re my favorite!”
