Coalition teaches residents how to quahog
The Buzzards Bay Coalition wrapped up its three-event “Learn to Quahog” series on Saturday when approximately 50 people arrived to search for the clams.
The coalition launched the new program in June.
“We provide some of the tools needed, rakes, baskets, waders, and show people how to quahog,” said Meghan Gahm, an outdoor educator for the coalition. “Hopefully, they become interested enough to go out an do this on their own.”
Two sessions were held at Silvershell Beach to accommodate those interested. The first was held at 10 a.m. and included some residents who had Marion shellfish permits. The second group met at 11 a.m. Only those with permits were allowed to remove quahogs.
Each session began with a question and answer session. Instructions for digging up the quahogs were also provided.
“It’s events like these that get people out onto the water, but it’s also about sharing in the cultural significance of Buzzards Bay,” Gahm said.
