Community Preservation Committee to bring seven projects to Town Meeting

The Community Preservation Committee will ask voters to decide whether or not to support seven different projects at Town Meeting in May.

Last year the committee focused solely on funding the renovation of tennis courts at Center School.

Chair John DeCosta told Selectmen, “This year we got hit with seven applications. It’s our biggest year yet.”

Each year, the committee allocates money to projects through the Community Preservation Act in four categories: open space, historic preservation, affordable housing and outdoor recreation, and open space. The money is raised through a surcharge on property tax bills. The state matches a percentage of those town-raised funds.

The projects total almost $309,000 and include funds for Barlow Cemetery, the Mattapoisett Historical Museum, the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Nasketucket Bay land acquisition, the bike path, phase two of the tennis court repairs, work at Town Beach and wharf repairs.

Regarding the Mattapoisett Historical Museum, DeCosta said $16,000 to update files would pave the way for the Historical Society to apply for other grants.

“Their catalog system is from the 1950s. They need to update it to get grants,” explained DeCosta.

He also said additional requirements in the bike path’s next phase from Mattapoisett Neck Road to Depot Street created the need for more funding.

The committee worked with the groups to lower their funding requests, said DeCosta.

The members decided to take all of the projects to town meeting and “let the people decide,” said DeCosta.
