Concert band returns after rained-out shows

The Marion Concert Band returned to the Robert O. Broomhead Bandstand Monday night for the first time since July 11. The past few performances were rained out, but Monday’s “Music from Across the Pond” theme was greeted with a colorful sunset and light breeze.

“I almost forgot how to get here,” conductor Tobias Monte joked. "The rain kept us away so long."

The night’s theme included concert tunes and marches commonly heard in British music halls and events. To correlate with the music, members of the Cape Cod British Car Club drove to the bandstand at Island Wharf to show off their automobiles.

“It’s a privilege to show off music and cars from Britain,” club president Bill Scott said. “The best part is having fun and driving around and hearing the music.”

As the band started at 7:30 a steady flow of listeners continued to fill the lawn, setting up chairs or chatting with friends or car owners. Pets sat near their owners or received love from the handful of children at the event. Some people read.

Residents Patrick and Jean McBride just stopped down to relax and listen to the music.

“We live just down the street, so we typically walk down and sit for a bit,” Patrick said. “It’s nice seeing everyone and hearing new themes. They do a great job.”

“It’s a nice location too,” Jean said. “Sometimes we’ll take the boat out and just sit on the water and hear the music.”

The Marion Concert Band is made up of numerous local and Southcoast-area musicians, according to Monte. Marion resident Wendy Rolfe, a renowned flutist, had a special connection to the music. Rolfe has a Royal British lineage and often heard the selections performed.

“My grandfathers were in the World Wars,” Rolfe said. “And sometimes I wonder if they heard these marches while they were stationed. It makes me hold these songs close to my heart.”
