Cops, community combine at Night Out Against Crime

Tri-town first responders came out in a big way Tuesday night for the annual Night Out Against Crime, held at Old Rochester Regional High School.

Police cars, fire trucks and even a harbormaster boat filled the front field of the school along with games and activities for families.

“It's a nice showing of people,” said Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons. “It's good for the guys to interact with the community.”

Part of a national event, the Night Out Against Crime gives police and firefighters an opportunity to interact with the public, which is important given recent unrest across the country, said Lyons.

Marion Police Chief Lincoln Miller said, “We hope for a good turnout. We try and make it a family event. It's something to keep us all involved in the community.”

The event allowed kids to climb into police cars and fire trucks, put out a mock fire, munch on pizza and donuts and play games.

Jake Nelson said this year was his second time to come to the Night Out, but it wouldn't be his last.

“I'm probably gonna come every year,” he said. “It's so much fun.”
