Council on Aging karaoke fundraiser a success

Jul 23, 2016

The Rochester Council on Aging saw a large turnout for its Johnny Cash karaoke-style concert and barbecue lunch fundraiser on Saturday, July 23.

Tickets were $10 a piece, and Lorraine Thompson, member of the Friends of the COA, estimated that more than $400 was raised. The money will help fund the costs to build the addition for the supportive day program. The Council has raised about half of what is needed thus far.

A barbecue lunch and dessert were served before local couple Edgar and Corinne Martin took the floor to sing.

The couple volunteered their services to the fundraiser because they want to give back to their community.

"We just want to give back and bring joy," Corinne said.

Edgar echoed his wife's statements, noting: "Our work shirts say 'The Martins, we spread joy one song at a time.'"

The couple doesn't only sing Johnny Cash songs, but "we sing a lot of them," Edgar said.

According to Corinne, Edgar plays the guitar, but the pair decided to use the karaoke version of the songs during the event, in an effort to provide a better and fuller sound.

The Martins operate a family-run entertainment service, with Edgar and Corinne doing just about all the singing, and daughter Stephanie running the computer.
