Cranberry researchers to speak at Sippican Woman’s Club
MARION — The Sippican Woman’s Cub’s next monthly meeting will feature two cranberry researchers.
On Friday, Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m., the club will hear from assistant professors Drs. Giverson Mupambi and Leela Saisree Uppala from the UMass Cranberry Research Station.
South Coast cranberry growers are some of the largest producers of cranberries in the United States, and the research station at One Bog Way in East Wareham supports the local industry and growers, according to a news release.
Mupambi and Uppala’s research work is important in “supporting local cranberry growers, the industry, production and the environment,” the release said.
“By the end of October local growers have dry/wet picked 95% of their berry crops,” the release said. “We all look forward to seeing those berries on our tables at Thanksgiving.”
Sippican Woman’s Club tours are traditionally held on the second Friday of each month. The clubhouse is located at 152 Front St., P.O. 121.
The club is known for its annual holiday house tour, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 7.
“With all hands on deck, members create a much-anticipated tour of elegant, unique and famous homes and includes a delightful sugar plum tea,” the release said.
The tour is the club’s major fundraiser for scholarships given to Marion students.
Other group activities include a monthly book club, game night and walking in the village.
