Cub Scouts race handmade cars in Pinewood Derby

Rochester Cub Scouts put their cars to the test in the group's Pinewood Derby competition on Saturday.

Cub Scouts spent the last couple months building cars to race from a small block of wood.

"We held two workshops, but it's all up to the kids," Cub Master Kevin Thompson said. "They do all the work at home."

There are specific rules about the weight of the car, but the rules are lenient enough the Thompson said kids could get very creative.

"We had one car that was a replica of the Batmobile," Thompson said.

That car won the "Best Design" category.

In addition to superlative categories such as that, there were also prizes given away for the top six fastest cars.

The top three winners, Ethan Empey, Logan Empey and Andrew Wronski, will advance to the regional competition in Taunton sometime next month.

The scouts raced their handmade cars down a 32 foot track inside the Rochester Memorial School cafeteria, and Thompson said on average it took about two and a half seconds for cars to make it down the track.

The fastest cars, he said, were the ones that kids spent months working on.

"Some families have been working for three or four months to figure out the science behind it," he said.

After the regional competition in Taunton next month, winners were move on to the council level, which includes Massachusetts, Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut and then on to the national level.
