Cyclists ride, raise funds to protect Buzzards Bay
Cyclists rested and stretched their legs at Eastover Farm Sunday as the conservation property was turned into a pit stop for participants in the Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride.
The Buzzards Bay Coalition held its eighth annual 75-mile ride with 140 riders and 100 volunteers helping along the way.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better day,” said Alicia Pimental, the Coalition’s communications and outreach manager.
This year, the Watershed Ride raised approximately $75,000 for the Coalition, Pimental said.
"It was definitely our biggest and most successful ride ever," she said.
Participants arrived from across the South Coast, six states and Washington, D.C.
The ride started at Horseneck Beach in Westport. Participants in a shorter 35-mile route left Eastover Farm at noon. Both routes ended at Quissett Harbor in Falmouth where food, drinks, awards and live music greeted riders.
In addition to paying a registration fee, riders were required to raise at least $300.
Last year, participants brought in $63,000 for the nonprofit organization.
Funds raised support the Coalition’s efforts to provide environmental education, protection, restoration and advocacy work throughout the 18-town Buzzards Bay watershed.
Cyclists Gerard Martin of Dartmouth and Barbara Fontaine of Brewster arrived just after noon at Eastover Farm on the 75-mile route.
Fontaine participated in the Watershed Ride for the first time last year, cycling through a day a chilly and rainy day.
This year, she convinced Martin, who has participated in the Pan Mass Challenge, to join her.
“It’s more fun with two people,” she said.
“She guilted me into it,” Martin joked.
