Dancers audition to appear in a music video

Apr 7, 2013

On Sunday afternoon, more than a dozen dancers of all ages descended on Adagio Arts and Wellness to bust a move.

The dancers competed for a chance to be in a hip-hop music video featuring New York City-based musician Matt Hunter.

This was the first big audition for Marion resident Nolan Gibbons. Gibbons, a second grader at Sippican School, said he was a little nervous about trying out. But, he said that he would relish the opportunity to be in a music video.

“I would be freaked out excited and really embarrassed,” Gibbons said.

Wareham neighbors and classmates Sam Scully and Grace Larner practiced together before the audition. The girls, both age 10, participate in Adagio’s hip-hop dancing classes.

If they were selected, Scully said, “I would have to slap [Larner] to make sure she was awake. If we were picked, I’d be happy.”

Danielle Lopes, owner of Adagio, said the video for "Dancin Man" would be filmed in New York in the summer. The dancers tried out with Adagio choreographer Junnyahh, a friend of Hunter’s.

The audition was a great showcase for local talent, said Adagio general manager Amanda Sousa.

“It’s one of our goals to bring talent to the community and to get it out there,” Sousa said.

Of the audition, Sousa said, “We’re looking for more of a positive attitude than perfect skills. This would be a great experience for aspiring dancers.”

As for who would appear in the video, Sousa said she and Lopes would take a few more days to decide.
