A domestic assault call combined with alleged illegal drug use resulted in the arrest and hospitalization of a mother and daughter on Tuesday evening.

Mattapoisett Police responded to a call from the Hillside Motel, room 102, where Elizabeth Porter, 59, told officer Aldaberto Cardoso that she had an argument with her daughter, Melissa Porter. During the conversation, she admitted to strangling Melissa, 25, after her daughter pushed her.

A press release from the Mattapoisett Police Department says officers found Melissa in the room crying uncontrollably. She told officer Kyle Pavao that her mother had strangled her.

Both were arrested on charges of domestic assault and battery.

During the booking process, Elizabeth was found to be in possession of three different prescription medications and zero prescriptions. She also admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the day.

While being booked, her speech slurred, she fell asleep in mid sentence and became difficult to wake, according to police. She told officers she had taken Xanax, Fioricet, Neurontin and Oxycontin. EMS took Elizabeth to Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

Just after midnight, her daughter also began exhibiting symptoms of an overdose. She was transported via ambulance to Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

Mother and daughter were admitted to the hospitals in custody, and were arraigned from their hospital beds on Wednesday – Elizabeth by a judge and clerk of courts from Wareham District Court and Melissa by a judge and clerk of courts from New Bedford District Court.

Elizabeth, whose address is 7 Marks Way, Carver, but who resides at the Hillside Motel, was charged with assault and battery, domestic strangulation and three counts of possession of Class E narcotics.

Melissa was charged with domestic assault and battery. Her address is listed as 150 Ellsworth St., Brockton, but she also lives at the motel.

In addition to the two women, there were three men in the room, all seemingly intoxicated, according to police.

Cory Berard, 26, of 6 Albatross Avenue, East Wareham, was arrested on a default warrant for disorderly conduct. Berard initially told officers that he was Brett Berard, his brother, and provided a Social Security number and date of birth associated with that name.

Officer Cardoso ran a check on Berard and discovered he was lying. He was charged with giving a false name and Social Security number to the police, and knowingly possessing Class B Suboxone without a prescription. He was held on $400 bail and arraigned at Wareham District Court on Wednesday.
