Employee drug testing policy reviewed
Selectmen are reviewing a policy that would test non-union municipal employees for drug and alcohol use.
Town Administrator Paul Dawson presented board members with a draft of the policy at their meeting, held Tuesday night.
The policy would not apply to union employees. Dawson said union contracts must be re-negotiated when a “change in working conditions” occurs. If enacted, he said the policy would meet that definition.
At a previous Selectmen meeting, board members asked if prospective union employees could be tested before officially being hired.
Dawson said town counsel gave the opinion that since the applicant was not yet a union member, testing may be done.
However, once hired, the policy would no longer apply.
The matter is under review and will be discussed at a later date.
