MATTAPOISETT — An exhibit exploring an iconic piece and moment of Mattapoisett history in its 100th anniversary year is opening soon at the Mattapoisett Museum.
“Wanderer 100: The Afterlife of Mattapoisett’s Last Whaler” opens Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. at the museum.
“Since the moment of her tragic crash in 1924, the Wanderer has been a symbol of Mattapoisett’s heyday as the shipbuilding capital of the 19th century, as well as that of the decline and fall of the New England whale trade,” a press release from the Mattapoisett Museum said.
The exhibit will investigate objects, ephemera and publications in order to consider what has made the ship so celebrated and beloved.
“A question we may not be able to answer, but one that deserves asking nonetheless,” the release said.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be provided. The exhibit is sponsored by Merrow Manufacturing.
The museum is open every Friday and Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. For more information, visit mattapoisettmuseum.org/visit.
