FEMA representatives to discuss flood map errors September 25
Representatives from FEMA, its engineering partners at Camp Dresser and McKee, the state, as well as Marion and Mattapoisett officials will hold a public meeting on September 25 at 6 p.m. at the Old Rochester Regional High School cafeteria to discuss errors made in the mapping process.
On July 17, the FEMA issued a new Flood Insurance Rate Map for Plymouth County, including the communities of Marion, Mattapoisett and Wareham.
The maps show the extent to which areas in the communities are at risk of flooding from the base (1-percent-annual-chance) flood.
These areas, also known as Special Flood Hazard Areas, are where floodplain management regulations are enforced and where the mandatory purchase of flood insurance applies.
In response to errors identified following the July 17 effective date, FEMA is undertaking a mapping correction process.
Homeowners, business owners, and other interested parties who believe they may be affected by the flood map revisions to the FEMA flood maps issued July 17 are encouraged to attend.
A short presentation will be given to discuss the areas of Marion, Mattapoisett and Wareham that have been affected, the correction process and timeline and how flood insurance requirements may change. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide information about flood insurance.
The flood map panels for Marion and Mattapoisett that have been revised and are in preliminary (draft) format may be viewed in advance of the meeting at http://www.starr-team.com/starr/RegionalWorkspaces/RegionI/PlymouthCountyMAMapMod .
Copies of the draft flood maps will also be available at the meeting for review. FEMA encourages interested parties to submit comments related to this revision to Timothy S. Hillier, CDM Smith, 50 Hampshire Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, HillierTS@cdmsmith.com .
