Field steps in as interim harbormaster

Aug 4, 2011

Horace Field III has been selected as interim harbormaster two weeks after Stephen Mach offered his resignation to the Board of Selectmen July 12. Mach, who resigned July 26, cited personal reasons for his decision and has been unavailable for comment.

Field has served as an assistant harbormaster for the last ten years and decided to become one after retiring from an aviation career in 1999.

“I needed something to do,” he said. “So I took courses through the Maritime Academy and Plymouth Police Academy.  But above all, I’m a certified harbormaster in the state of Massachusetts.”

Field said the work he and his team do can be a chore at times but his favorite part is being out on the water.

“It feels great to be in this position. The support from the townspeople and town has been magnificent.”

Town Administrator Michael Gagne said the search for a new harbormaster and the criteria for determining one will be addressed in an upcoming Board of Selectmen’s meeting. He did not know how long the search would take or a deadline for selections.
