Fire destroys home in Mattapoisett, no injuries reported
On Sunday night, a fire ripped through a Mattapoisett home. Nine hours later, the fire was extinguished, the owners were safe, but their home was destroyed.
Mattapoisett firefighters responded to the home at 22 Crystal Spring Road, owned by Mark and Judith Mooney, shortly after 8 p.m., said Mattapoisett Fire Deputy Chief Walter Morgado.
At the time of the blaze, the family was at home, but no one was hurt.
“Everybody got out ok,” Morgado said. “We were able to salvage a few family keepsakes – some family photos.”
Other than that, Morgado said the family’s house was a “total loss.”
The fire occurred just days after the winter storm dropped one foot of snow on the region. Due to the snow, it took close to nine hours to put out the flames, Morgado said.
Also, due to the winter storm on Friday, 99 percent of NSTAR's Mattapoisett customers, including the Mooneys, lost power.
“The weather conditions didn’t help,” Morgado said. “It takes a lot of energy out of the firemen to walk through the snow with all of their gear on.”
There is no word on where the Mooneys are currently staying and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Morgado said.
