Fire results in significant damage to North Street house

Mar 27, 2014

Firefighters faced 30 mph winds and freezing temperatures Tuesday as they battled a fire at 27 North St.

The Police Department received a call at 11:25 p.m. on Tuesday after a burglar alarm went off at the house. The first officer who arrived smelled smoke and requested that the Fire Department be dispatched. Upon further investigation, the police officer saw fire from two windows on the side of the house.

The Fire Department arrived on the scene moments later and stopped the progression of the fire. There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire. The damage is expected to be in excess of $100,000, according to Fire Chief Andrew Murray.

An investigation proved that the initial burglar alarm was set off by the fast moving fire.

The Marion Fire Department responded to the scene and assisted the Mattapoisett Fire Department with their ladder truck and personnel. The Fairhaven Fire Department also responded with an engine company and covered the Mattapoisett station as well as the remainder of town. The Massachusetts State Fire Marshalls Office in conjunction with the state police assisted at the scene with the investigation in determining the cause of the fire.

The fire is still under investigation. The last firefighters cleared the scene just prior to 5 a.m. on March 26.
