The fix is in for Marion Music Hall
On the job for just two months now, Facilities Administrator Shaun Cormier told Selectmen the Marion Music Hall desperately needs repairs.
Cormier spoke to Selectmen on Tuesday night. Last year the board started the practice of inviting department heads to offer regular updates. This was Cormier’s first appearance at a Selectmen meeting.
The 123-year-old hall last underwent major renovations in 1998. Three years prior, an anonymous donor gave $250,000 challenging the town to match that amount for repairs. The hall is heavily used by town groups, civic organizations and rented for private functions.
Cormier said a new roof and other fixes are needed to prevent further water damage.
“The building is letting in a lot of moisture that’s causing damage to the structure,” Cormier said.
Selectmen said they were unaware of the extent of the problem.
“It looks like the Music Hall has a lot of work to be done. There’s more issues there than I thought,” Selectman Jon Henry said.
“It’s one of the more neglected buildings that I’d like to take care of,” Cormier said.
The problems extend from the roof to the basement. Cormier identified a large leak on the roof of the building’s north side, which is affecting the ceiling above the stage.
“The ceiling is starting to drop due to the moisture,” Cormier said. “So that’s a priority.” Brick walls in the basement are “severely deteriorated,” according to Cormier. “These really old bricks are like sponges, they soak up all the moisture,” he said.
Cormier said retired architect and Marion resident Bill Saltonstall drafted a plan to install a new drainage system in the basement. But fixing the issue will take more than that. The walls are designed to support the hall and must be replaced to keep the hall structurally sound.
Cormier said he would continue to evaluate the hall and other town buildings. He’s expected to submit another report to Selectmen in a few months.
