Fizz Boom Read a page-turning success in Rochester

Sep 15, 2014

To the Editor:

The Plumb Library Summer Reading Program, FIZZ BOOM READ, “blew up” in June with over 100 people in attendance at the Mike the Bubbleman show, and culminated with an “electric” dance party on Aug. 30.

We celebrated a successful summer of science and reading: 230 registrants (54 adults, 102 kids aged 3 to 9, 74 tweens/teens kids aged 10 to 16) logged over 8,060 reading hours and wrote 170 reviews. Many participants met or exceeded their personal summer reading goals. Medals were awarded to kids who read over ten hours and for several other special categories. All participants received a poster and certificate specially designed by the Boston Bruins.

By working together with a strong network of partners and sponsors, we were able to provide ten weeks of diverse hands-on programming, free books, and prizes! Families explored, discovered and experienced various branches of science, while also interacting with new people and being encouraged to read every day. Special thanks to the following:

  • The Massachusetts Statewide Summer Library Program sponsors - the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
  • Our local sponsors who provided us with significant financial donations, with free programs or items or with product discounts: Friends of Plumb Library, Rochester Lions Club, MA/Rochester Cultural Council, Rockland Trust, First Congregational Church, No Kidding, Hair and Body Solutions, Pawtucket Red Sox, MA Dept. of ECC and the ORR CFCE program, Wareham Gatemen, Rochester Woman's Club, Plumb Corner Tenants Association, Matt's Blackboard, Captain Bonney's, DJ Howie, Book Warehouse II, Shirt Shack, Children’s Museum of Easton, Friendly's, author Kristine Daniels and the USS Constitution.
  • Our patrons who either donated items or donated their time to "edu-tain" us: Nina Schneider, Tina Rood, Jen Jeppson, Bev Pierce, Louisa Medeiros, Kathy Pena, Joan Flaherty, Rachel Barrett, Tom Kinsky, Michelle Cusolito, Lucille Morris, Jess Fuller, Katrina and Bridget Farias, Emma Makuch, Kyle and Brett Rood, Sam Dunn, Angie Weigel (Plumbelina), Victoria, Amanda and Emily Wheeler. Special appreciation goes to the Wheelers, Roods and Sam Dunn for their weekly commitment to our newly created Minecraft Club. It was due to the efforts of these kids that this club was offered and maintained on a weekly basis! It was a huge hit, and we will be making it a year-round program.
  • The families who participated and visited the library often.
  • The Plumb Library staff who always demonstrate their team spirit during summer programming!

Hope to see you next year. The 2015 summer reading program theme is heroes! Local heroes be prepared for a phone call!

Thank you,
