Flamingos to flock to local yards

Jan 2, 2013

Snow and flamingos are a strange wintry mix, but both may be on local lawns soon.

The Old Rochester Regional Junior High School’s Red Squad Cheerleaders are hosting a fundraiser this month, wherein yards will get “flocked” with 25 pink flamingo lawn ornaments for a price.

“We are just trying to help the girls raise money to get to Florida,” said parent Dawn Underhill.

In November, the squad won an entry to a national competition at Walt Disney World in February. The 12 girls must raise money for transportation, flights, accommodations, and food, and using pink flamingos to get to Florida makes sense.

“We need to raise $12,000 in a short window of time,” said Underhill. Parents and kids hope that creative fundraisers will encourage people to give.

So far, the squad has planned a trip to Foxwoods for adults and written letters to local businesses and relatives. There are also plans for a movie night in January with $10 hair cuts to be offered by local stylists.

“We have another parent trying to secure a hall for a teen dance in January,” said Red Squad Coach Patricia McArdle.

With the flamingo flocking, people can pay $25 to have a friend’s yard covered in flamingos. The hope is that each person “flocked” will then send the flamingos to another house.

“If somebody wants to flock somebody, we’ll go in stealth mode at night,” said Underhill.

People can also pay $20 for “Flamingo Protection Insurance” and $10 to find out who sent the bright pink birds to their lawn. The birds will only stay on each lawn for 24 to 48 hours, said Underhill.

“It’s funny. It’s not really offensive,” she said.

In the past several weeks, the cheerleaders have raised a little over $6,000.

With the flamingos and the other fundraisers coming up, McArdle said, “I think it could take us to the end or at least pretty close. It’s definitely been a challenge with the holidays.”

Underhill plans to start the flamingo fundraiser in the next week. For more information, email orrcheers@verizon.net or call Dawn Underhill at 508-763-5356 or Edythe Saucier-Camboia at 508-667-6964.
