Flash freeze sends vehicles skidding

Dec 27, 2013

A flash freeze on Thursday night resulted in five accidents in a 20-minute window, said Marion Police Chief Lincoln Miller.

“The roads had been wet all day and at a certain point the temperature turned to cause it to freeze suddenly,” said Miller.

The accidents occurred on Route 6, Route 105 and County Road.

There were two rollovers, one just over the town line in Wareham across the bridge on Route 6. Another car hit a tree and the fifth accident involved a truck colliding with the guardrail on the highway overpass on Route 105.

Miller said only two of the accidents resulted in injuries, all minor.

Road conditions did make reaching and clearing the accidents difficult for responders and tow trucks.

“It taxed public safety resources for a period of time,” Miller said. “One of the rollovers near Hiller dodge on Route 6 was probably almost an hour before we could clear that.”

Miller said the Department of Public Works had been called out to sand the roadways about 10 minutes before the police received the first accident call.

“Fortunately, they did manage to get out pretty quick,” he said.

The Fire Department and EMS responded to the accidents, and Rochester first responders also helped at the County Road and Route 105 accidents.
