Frosty Runner Road Race gets nice weather (at last!)
Two years ago there was a blizzard, last year was cold with precipitation looming, but this year the Frosty Runner Road Race got sunny skies.
Hosted on Saturday by Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School's cross country team and National Honors Society, the race features a 10.5-mile run, a 5K run and a 5K walk.
Bethany Botelho started the race as a way to develop the cross country team and to help pay for the team's needs.
More than 150 signed up for this year's race, and Botelho said the Frosty Runner has steadily attracted more participants across the last five years.
“We've kept it going and it's kept growing,” she said.
Runners on Saturday were delighted to have a clear morning for the race.
“We are so lucky. It could be snowing. It could be raining. It's perfect,” said Kelly Spring.
In the 5K, Nathan Brito of New Bedford finished first at 17:54; followed by Zachary Soucy of Acushnet, 19:15; and Jack Pereira of New Bedford, 19:29.
Rachel Matuszek of North Dartmouth was the first woman across the line with 23:50, followed by Kathy Lopes of Fairhaven with 26:42 and Laura Graham of Lakeville with 26:56.
In the 10.5-mile race, Michael North of East Falmouth ran 1:08:55 and came in first with Joe Francisco of Acushnet in second at 1:10:18 and Tom Gelson of Marion in third at 1:12:30.
Rebecca Cotugno of North Dartmouth had a race record with 1:12:51. Janytzabell Rodriguez-Ramos of New Bedford came in second at 1:13:55 and Mary Cass of Westport came in 1:16:03. In fact, the top three women in the 10.5-mile race all beat the race record of 1:19:06 set by Meris Tombari in 2012.
