Fun, not competition, the emphasis for Oceaneers Soccer
If you’re all about winning, don’t go to the Oceaneers Soccer.
“Our motto is ‘It’s all about the fun,’” said Tiffany Figueiredo. “We deemphasize winning at all costs.”
She and her husband Jorge Figueiredo started Oceaneers 10 seasons ago with the goal of creating a noncompetitive environment for kids to learn soccer.
“We just wanted a place where kids could come and play no matter what their level is,” said Jorge, a former semi-pro soccer player.
The location and concept attracted many to Dexter Field in Rochester. Each year around 400 youth participate, and on Saturday mornings form September to November the field is a sea of kids kicking, diving and running.

“I think it’s really important for keeping fit,” she said.
For younger kids, it’s all about learning the sport. Though as one parent said, it does take a while for them to learn their positions rather than running together in herds from one end of the field to the other.
Coach and dad George Fearons heads up the three- and four-year-old Minnows.
“It’s like herding cats, but it’s fun,” he said. “We have a good time.”
Once the kids get older, they get pretty adept at the game, and said Jorge, they make friends with peers from other schools.
While kids from nearby towns, such as Wareham and Acushnet, can join the league, tri-town kids make up the majority of the players.
“It gives them the opportunity to meet kids at a younger age, so that when they do go over to the junior high and high school, they know people. That’s a benefit,” said Jorge.
Many kids who have graduated out of the program also go on to join their high school teams. Some come back to help referee and coach teams as well.
The Figueiredos’ model seems to be working, and as an Oceaneers parent for eight years, Sonya Silva knows why.
“It’s a great atmosphere. It’s run by great people, and it’s [taught my kids] being part of a team, win or lose.”
Registration for the current season is closed, but information will be posted at www.oceaneerssoccer.com.
