Gerald Wainio, 67
With his love of family, friends and fishing Gerald “Jerry” Jack Wainio left behind the Finn-jinuity ready for a strong striper season on June 22, 2017. He was 67.
Jerry was born to Irja Maria and Urho Jacob Wainio on June 23, 1949 in Wareham, MA. He almost immediately got to work solving problems in his own ingenious way.
Jerry held many roles at Maxim Motor Company from installing tires, to delivering fire engines countrywide, to organizing company wide water fights on the shop floor. With the untimely closure of Maxim Motors, Jerry took the chance to go it alone as the proprietor of Bud’s Trailer in Middleboro. He made his mark with clever solutions to customer’s problems, a beer and good humor. It was also a hangout for the spur of the moment, gathering advice for a project and libations. Jerry promised to never stop working and he left with that promise intact.
Heralded and renowned as a fisherman throughout Cape Cod waters (though bested once by his granddaughter), fishing remained a passion to the end. If not for Captain Wainio, many a mate would have been hard pressed to put anything bigger than a scup in the cooler. While those stories are endless, what he loved most was the camaraderie and friendship of the experience. Connecting on the best spot, partnership on the boat and making sure “bubba” knew he had a good day. He was a master at cribbage, distracting competition with inappropriate jokes while taking their money. Because he knew he’d see smiles Jerry would sneak out early on a Friday to take his family out on Friday evening boat rides… and many a weekend on Buzzards Bay.
Jerry’s love for family and friends always showed through his tough exterior. Those who knew Jerry frequently saw him “well up” when talking with pride about his children and grandchildren. The grandchildren knew a hug always got you what you wanted from Papa.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 46 years, Patricia Wainio, his cherished children Marianne (Wainio) Coffin and her husband Joel of Plymouth, MA, Lisa Jane Wainio of Evergreen, CO, and Gerald “Jerry” Jack Wainio Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Rochester, MA and his beloved grandchildren, Alexandra, Alanna, Phoebe, Evelyn and Finlay. He is also survived by his sister Jane Ouellette and many nieces and nephews.
Services for Jerry will be held at the American Legion, 199 Federal Furnace Rd, Plymouth, MA on Wednesday, June 28, 2 - 6 p.m. Some of the other thousands of people Jerry has touched with his smiles, jokes, and stories will be welcome to come celebrate his life. Come as Jerry would expect to see you and be prepared to share memories. This is not a formal affair; we plan to have fun. Jerry wouldn’t have it any other way.
Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.
