Goldavitz Bog now managed by Open Space Commission

Selectmen gave the Marion Open Space Acquisition Commission authority to mange a 75-acre property known as Goldavitz Bog on Tuesday night.

The site is home to walking trails and abuts other open space properties owned by the Sippican Lands Trust.

Commission Chair John Rockwell told Selectmen his board sought control of the property to put up signs, maintain trails, install gates and coordinate with the Sippican Lands Trust. As a busy board, Rockwell said managing land isn’t a high priority for Selectmen.

“It is kind of low on our radar,” Chair Stephen Cushing agreed. “Not that it isn’t important.”

The property is located south of the Department of Public Works building on Benson Brook Road. Rockwell said the area is home to endangered turtles, old stone bridges and the bogs, which are flooded.

Conservation Commission Chair Norm Hills raised the issue of managing phragmites that – if left unchecked – could overtake the area. A hardy, invasive species, phragmites sparked a discussion last year at Town Meeting related to the management of Sprague’s Cove. Conservation officials sought funds to remove the weeds there.

“It’s something we need to address going forward,” Hills said. “If we don’t do something this stuff will get ahead of us.”

Because the bogs are flooded, Rockwell said there’s less a chance of the weed taking over. However, it is creeping up on the banks of trails.

With no budget, he said volunteers must be relied on for maintenance.

“Mowing is an effective measure. It just needs to be constant,” Rockwell said. “What happens is people don’t invest the amount of time to go back again and again and again.”

In the meantime, Rockwell said he would monitor the phragmites. There are plans to install a kiosk and signs in the future. Raising awareness about the property is another property, Rockwell said.
