Habitat for Humanity, Marion officials to finalize land deal

Hoping to break ground on its first project in Marion, Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity is nearing a final agreement with Marion officials.

Although the May Town Meeting voters approved Habitat's plans to build a single-family home on the 19,000 square-foot parcel located at 185 Wareham Road, the deed to the property has yet to be transferred from the town.

During Tuesday night's meeting with the Selectmen, Town Counsel Jon Witten said the final draft of the agreement between the two parties would be complete soon.

Representatives from Habitat hope to have the foundation laid on the property before winter, Witten said.

The agreement would allow contractors working for Habitat to access the property to remove an existing structure before the sale is complete.

The Selectmen approved Witten's request to allow both himself and Town Administrator Paul Dawson to continue negotiations with Habitat.

Overall, Witten said he was pleased with the progress of the project.

“I’m very comfortable that we are much closer than we were a few weeks ago,” Witten said.
