Habitat for Humanity program to help homeowners
The Buzzards Bay Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers to launch a program to help homeowners make repairs at little or no cost.
The organization is known for constructing affordable housing for first-time home buyers by using volunteers, donations, and sweat equity.
The new program, “A Brush with Kindness,” is designed to serve families in need by performing exterior repairs, but volunteers are needed.
Painting, porch and roof repair, and weatherization are some of the jobs available through the program, said Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Christine Lacourse.
“A lot of people already own their homes, but don’t have the money to fix them up. I think it’s a great program to help the community and revitalize neighborhoods that need it,” Lacourse said.
She said Habitat for Humanity seeks crew leaders, skilled labor tradesman, and anyone who is willing to learn how to make basic repairs.
A committee chairperson to coordinate projects, volunteers, and program candidates is also needed.
Lacourse said local businesses are being approached to donate materials.
“Our overall goal is to find free labor and then free or discounted materials for the individual projects,” she said. A Brush With Kindness participants will be asked to pay for the cost of materials, which will be much less than without the program.
Similar to the home building program, those who apply for help through A Brush With Kindness will need to demonstrate a level of need before approval.
Lacourse noted the project is a national program that has been successful in other parts of the country.
