Habitat for Humanity raises the roof with 'The Hunger Games' and Jimmy Buffett

Big stars are expected to make an appearance at the Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity’s Raise the Roof Gala, and you might even be able to take one home.

The local branch of Habitat, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income families build homes at cost, covers towns from Wareham to Dartmouth, and is set to build its first Marion home within the year.

The Raise the Roof Gala, which is back after a one-year hiatus, will help support the project.

“I think everybody really missed it. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Habitat board Vice-president Robin Ragle-Davis. “This is a fun event where we can all get together and support Habitat.”

Set for Friday, September 28 at Marion’s Sippican Tennis Club, the event will raise funds through ticket sales as well as through the likes, or rather likenesses, of Jimmy Buffett, Arnold Palmer, Elton John and Wayne Gretsky.

Signed and framed photos of the celebrities will be up for grabs at the gala’s silent auction, which also includes a movie poster from “The Hunger Games” with the cast’s signatures.

“There are things that are really going to appeal to people of different age and interests,” said Ragle-Davis.

But, the origins of such high profile photos is a mystery.

“We kind of like to keep that our little secret,” she said. “ We have a source.”

Ragle-Davis said other items to be auctioned off include a hot tub party and a two-hour cruise for four.

So far, around 90 tickets have been sold for the event, but Ragle-Davis hopes to have at least 130 people in attendance.

Ragle-Davis said the gala would help generate more excitement for the upcoming Marion house and a potential house in Rochester.

“We’ve had a tremendous response. People are excited that there’s going to be a build happening in their own town,” she said.

The Raise the Roof Gala will be Friday, September 28 at Sippican Tennis Club in Marion from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 and are available at the door. For more information contact, 508-758-4517 or email buzzardsbayareahabitat@yahoo.com.
