Harbor Days conversations begin in Mattapoisett

Plans are underway for Harbor Days, the annual summer celebration, set for this July.

Mattapoisett Lions Club President Valerie Kane visited the Mattapoisett Select Board Meeting on Tuesday March 22 to discuss the details. The club sponsors the event.

She requested that Chase Canopy Company put the tent up in Shipyard Park earlier than usual on July 6, for Harbor Days festivities on July 16 and 17.

She noted that the triathlon would occur later this year, on July 24.

This was approved unanimously by the select board.

Kane and the select board also discussed the issue of wifi at Harbor Days. Kane stated that she wanted to get better Wi-Fi for vendors that are there, as it has been an issue in the past, and it could even be a “safety concern” since most people have trouble getting phone service.

“We’re going to do what we can to boost signal in the area that weekend,” said Town Administrator Mike Lorenco, who resolved that he would call Verizon.

Kane mentioned that the Lions Club was interested in having a social adult event since the tent would be up so early, and inquired about what could be done to serve alcohol at Shipyard Park.

Lorenco stated that the current bylaw prohibits alcohol at Shipyard Park, “period.”

“The reality is we’re in no position to violate the bylaw,” said select board member Jordan Collyer.

The only park in Mattapoisett where alcohol is occasionally permitted is Veterans Park, and Collyer explained that this is because there’s more parking, making it easier to manage for events like parties.

“If we were to consider changing or modifying the bylaw, it would open a can of worms for management,” added Collyer.

The two-day festival will be held on July 16-17 at Shipyard Park and feature entertainment, craft booths, raffles, food, and other activities.
