Hazardous waste collection Sept. 26
ABC Disposal and the Town of Rochester are hosting a hazardous waste day for residents of Rochester and Mattapoisett on Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The collection will be at Rochester Highway Department, 200 Ryder Rd.
Hazardous chemicals that are acceptable for collection include oil-based paints, solvents, insecticides, weed killers, art supplies, aerosol cans and used motor oil.
Asbestos, smoke detectors, commercial or industrial waste, tires and ammunition are among the items that will not be accepted. A complete list is available by calling Mattapoisett Board of Health agent Dale Barrows at 508-758-4100 ext. 8.
To ensure safety, tighten caps and lids, leave materials in original labeled containers, pack in sturdy upright boxes and pad with newspaper, go directly to the site after packing the vehicle, and never smoke while handling hazardous materials. Do not place waste in a garbage bag, and sort and separately pack paint, pesticides and household cleaners.
There is a charge for this service, and proof of residence is required. The cost is $30 for a half car up to 10 pounds and $50 for a full car up to 25 pounds.
