Hazmat, bomb squad called to Marion

Mar 24, 2017

The Massachusetts hazardous materials team and state police bomb squad were called into Marion this morning after a suspicious device was reported on Pumping Station Road.

Marion police were alerted to the device and contacted the fire department, who then took over the investigation.

According to Fire Chief Brian Jackvony the suspicious device looked like a soda can with two burning cigarettes sticking out of the top.

“We weren’t sure the contents of the can,” he said. “There was some cause for concern naturally.”

Jackvony said there was a possibility it could have been an incendiary device.

Because the fire department was unable to identify what was in the can, they called in the hazmat team and bomb squad. Neither found anything of concern, so after the bomb squad secured the device it was removed. Jackvony said he has no idea what the intent was.

No injuries were reported and the event is still under investigation.
