High school crowns 'Mr. ORR'
Guts and glamour were the themes of the night as 11 Old Rochester Regional High School boys took the stage for the 7th annual Mr. ORR competition on Thursday, April 3.
A spin-off on a Miss America pageant, the event raised funds for the senior and junior classes. Freshman John Kvilhaug, juniors Isaiah Kidney and Ian MacLellan, and seniors Michael Barrus, Kiernan Besse, Zach Bowen, Chris Carando, Talon Gomes, Troy Rood, Chad Santello and Tyler Zell competed.
The night kicked off with a choreographed dance number. The boys also modeled casual wear and formal wear and showed off their skills and quick-thinking minds in the talent and question and answer sections. MC Paul Sardinha had trouble holding in his laughter as he read the self-written bios of “ORR’s Finest.” Bowen enjoys “making babies smile.” Gomes brought his puppy onto the stage.
For the talent section, Rood and MacLellan sang, Santello did a lip-synced to Queen's “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and Zell rapped. Kidney demonstrated 4-D drawing, while Kvilhaug danced ballet and Barrus performed a lifeguard routine. Carando juggled, then Besse followed directly after him juggling without any balls. Bowen and Gomes teamed up to perform a Star Wars duel choreographed to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.”
Each contestant was asked one question relating to his time at ORR and one puzzling question during the question and answer period. Besse made the audience say “awww” when he said the part he will miss most about high school is seeing his girlfriend every day. If there was a movie made about Rood’s life, only he could play himself because, “nobody else has my dashing good looks!” If he could get rid of one state, MacLellan would have North Dakota bite the dust.
Faculty judges voted on the winners. Chad Santello and John Kvilhaug tied for third place. Troy Rood captured second place and Talon Gomes took home the win. Special thanks were given to Main Street Formals for donating tuxedos for the event.
