High school, junior high to add new courses

Old Rochester Regional High School principal Mike Devoll has been working on revamping the curriculum at the school.

He presented what he called the “first wave” of changes at Wednesday night’s ORR School Committee meeting. He said he expects to return in March with a second wave.

Devoll said one of the changes will be replacing Honors Latin 5 with Advanced Placement Latin.

“We’ve been offering AP in Spanish and French forever, so now we’re offering that,” he said. “We’ll be ready to launch that in the fall.”

The high school is also adding a new technology teacher next year, and plans to hire someone with an expertise in engineering.

“We’ve made enhancements in visual design and have a person in place for the computer science prong, so we’d be looking to hire an engineering teacher to round out our technology department,” Devoll said.

Part of the changes in the technology curriculum will be a name change – “Intro to Robotics” will become “Lego Robotics,” while “Computer Science” will become “Computer Science for All.”

“We’re trying to attract different kinds of kids,” Devoll said, specifically mentioning getting more girls to take computer science classes.

The high school will also add an AP computer science class.

“This opens doors for kids at an AP level in a field that is growing,” Devoll said.

Junior High Principal Kevin Brogioli said the junior high was also planning on expanding its technology courses but is still working on the detail.

He said he’s not sure if the computer science course will be for seventh or eighth graders yet, but that all students in that grade will be required to take it for a semester.

“It would complement what the high school is trying to do,” Brogioli said. “All students would be taking this computer science class and hopefully we grow some interest in that area.”

Devoll also mentioned adding more thematic English 12 courses, such as “Monsters, Murder and Madness,” but said he’d have more information during the second wave in March. All the other courses were approved by the School Committee.
