Highway accident sends three to hospital
Three teens were transported to Rhode Island Hospital trauma center on Thursday night following a single car crash on I-195's westbound lane in Mattapoisett.
No names are being released at this time and their conditions are unknown.
State police and Mattapoisett police and fire were notified of the accident just after 7 p.m. Fairhaven EMS also responded.
An 18-year-old man from Buzzards Bay in a 2002 Infini G20 Sedan was behind the wheel. There were also two teen passengers.
Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray said the car had wrapped around a tree. The roof and doors had to be removed with the jaws of life to extract all three people from the car.
"It was pretty extensive work on the Fire Department's end," said Murray.
The accident occurred as firefighters were gathering for a training, which allowed them to get to the accident more quickly than usual.
"The fortunate thing was everybody was already here at the station," he said.
That also meant more manpower on the scene to help the passengers.
Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons said she didn’t know if the accident was related to weather, speed or some other factor, and the incident is still under investigation by state police.
A representative from the state police said no citations have been made so far.
Police were on the scene for approximately an hour and a half.
