Highway Department out in full force, outages down to double digits

Jan 27, 2015

The snow keeps falling and the plows keep plowing in the tri-town.

Police are urging residents to stay off the streets as the snow clearing continues.

In Mattapoisett, Rob Daener has been fielding calls for the Highway Department.

At 3 p.m., he said calls were just starting to pick up.

"We start with our main drags and then we branch out. We're starting to get to some of the secondary stuff," he said.

About the beach communities, Daener said, "They're pretty much buried in snow drifts."

The Highway Department team has been working non-stop since 2 p.m. on Monday, sanding and salting the roads.

"I'm ready for a good hot meal and a shower and some beddy bye," said a tired Daener.

While plow crews are hard at work, some residents took the storm in stride.

Mattapoisett residents Chip and Colleen Johns bundled up to take their dog Remy for a walk.

"With the travel ban we thought it'd be a good idea to get outside and enjoy the empty streets," Colleen said.

As Remy bounded between snow banks, the occasional passing plow was the only sign of traffic in Mattapoisett center in late afternoon.

As for power outages, the tri-town has largely been spared.

Marion had the highest number of outages. At 10 a.m., NSTAR reported 1,360 outages in town. Mattapoisett had 10 outages while Rochester had just under 300. By 3 p.m., Marion had only 15 NSTAR customers in the dark, while Mattapoisett and Rochester had one and five, respectively.

Those with outages in Rochester can go to the emergency shelter at the Council on Aging, which opened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Limited transportation will be provided for those in need to the shelter, located at Dexter Lane. Call 508-763-2424 to schedule a ride. Those seeking shelter must bring a pillow, blanket and any necessary medications.

Public safety officials remind residents to call NStar customer service at 1-800-592-2000 with power restoration questions or to report non-emergency power outages.

Updates regarding the storm will be posted on the The Rochester Police Department's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/rochestermapd.

In Marion, Sippican School's shelter will remain closed unless there is a surge in outages.

Mattapoisett Police said there is no shelter planned yet. One will open if needed.
