Honor Society makes sure every child will have a present
Remember when you got the present you really wanted on Christmas day?
What if that was the only thing you got for Christmas?
Old Colony's National Honor Society is making sure that all children will have at least one gift to open by creating gift bags for underprivileged children in the area.
The Honor Society will donate the gift bags to a program called Head Start Preschool which has two locations in New Bedford.
The National Honor Society adopted the program four years ago, in 2013, as part of its commitment to community service. The directors of the program are Special Education teacher Heather Gifford and math teacher Marcie Gamelin. Originally, the students filled shoe boxes, but switched to a gift bag last year.
This year, the Honor Society has donated 335 gift bags to the Head Start Program in New Bedford, for the 335 children in Head Start Preschool.
This year, Gifford has developed donation boxes for each vocational department at Old Colony, as well as the academic program. Each department was asked to donate different items, such as socks, to the drive.
Twenty of Old Colony's National Honor Society students will visit Head Start to hand out gift bags on Tuesday, December 19.
