From icons to ocean views: Marion Art Center opens Member exhibit
The Marion Art Center was a hub of activity on Friday night as artists and guests gathered for the Winter Member Art Show.
Although the annual event is not juried, Executive Director Deborah Bokelkamp said she was wowed by the quality of the work.
“The talent of the artists is phenomenal,” said Bokelkamp. “I’m always stunned by the continuity of the talent."
The show features 62 pieces from 32 local artists, and the subject matter ranges from icons to ocean views.
Marion resident Geoffrey Moran has shown his landscapes and architectural paintings at the Center for years. For this show, Moran decided to exhibit two of his icon paintings, employing the techniques used by the early Christian church.
An art historian by education, Moran said he was taught to look down on the flat style of such paintings, but he learned to appreciate the restraint and theological aspect of them.
“You’re not free to invent too much,” said Moran. “It would be like rewriting the scriptures. They’re supposed to depict the Kingdom come.”
Although Moran is a seasoned exhibitor, the Member Show is the first time Dale Wallace has shown her paintings at the Center.
“I tried to pick something that was in the middle of what I do,” said Wallace.
Wallace, a Rochester resident, said she began painting five years ago. Since her daughter is an art teacher, Wallace was inspired to take up painting before retiring.
Having her work on the wall for all to see feels “odd,” said Wallace.
But she said, “It’s nice to be a part of the community.”
Mattapoisett resident Paula Cobb agreed. Another long-term exhibitor at the Center, Cobb said she appreciates being around other artists.
“You get to know people. You get to know them through their art,” said Cobb. “You don’t need to be in a workshop.”
The exhibit runs through March 2.
