Imagination is the destination for ORR group

Boy meets girl. Girl rejects boy. Boy pursues girl. They kiss. The end.
A simple tale, but its telling marked the beginning of a journey to an international competition where teenagers from Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester will again compete in Destination Imagination’s Global Finals.
Destination Imagination, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to teaching creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. There a few different Destination Imagination groups in the tri-towns. This one is made up of freshman students and is based at Old Rochester Regional High School.
In May, local destination group members (who dubbed themselves “The Geeks”) will travel to the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, to join more than 1,200 teams to present answers to challenge prompts from Destination Imagination. About 15,000 people from 45 states, seven Canadian provinces and 13 countries will gather. Last year, the team took ninth place overall at the finals.
The story, called “Lover Boy,” is the group’s answer to a challenge posed by Destination Imagination.
The challenge limited group members to: present a team-created story about a character that uses a disguise, use only non-verbal techniques to present the story, and design, and build at least two masks that enhance the story.
And they only had six minutes to tell that story, set-up time included.
To answer the challenge Holly Frink, of Marion, said brainstorming sessions were held with the group’s other four members.
Though other challenge categories included technical, science, improvisational, service learning, and other choices the group settled on fine arts. Eventually, group members settled on a 1920s-style silent film motif. A black and white backdrop painted to look like a park set the mood. The actors wore clothing reminiscent of the era as they acted out the story.
As a drama club student Frink, a freshman, said the theatrical elements of Destination Imagination drew her interest. This is her second year in it.
There are adult volunteers available for guidance, but co-manager Tina Rood, of Rochester, noted the group’s success depends entirely on the students.
“The basis of it is student ideas,” she said. “It is all student choice. Everything you see up here was created by them on their own.”
Rood has been with this group for eight years following it from Rochester Memorial Elementary School into the high school. Kerry Bulman also serves as co-manager.
On its way to the Global Finals “The Geeks” earned recognition at the state and regional level winning Renaissance Awards for creativity, engineering, and design Rood said.
She quoted judges who said they “fell head over heels for this team’s love story.”
However, Destination Imagination is seeking help from the community to fund the trip to the finals. It costs about $1,100 to send each student to Tennessee. A fundraiser will be held May 5 at the Mattapoisett Fire House to offset expenses.
Donations are also accepted Rood said. She noted the community is very supportive of the group’s efforts.
Also, volunteers are welcome.
“Anyone interested in volunteering, or leading Destination Imagination, should step forward because it’s a great experience,” Frink said.
