Kids version of Hairspray a real tease

Get out the aerosol, cue the comb, and plug in the hairdryer because Hairspray is coming to the Center School stage!

For the past seven weeks, seven elementary students have learned an abbreviated version of the John Waters Broadway musical.

“The music is upbeat, and the kids enjoy it,” said instructor Aly Pereira, who adjusted the script to make it more kid-friendly.

The students sing eight songs from the play and have a few lines to learn.

Caitlin Collier plays the lead character Tracy Turnblad and said the hardest part of the show was remembering her lines. To get ready for the performance, she said, “We’ve been practicing the dances over and over, and practicing the lines.”

Caitlin sports a frizzy ‘do for her role, and Pereira said she likes to give the kids free reign for their costumes.

“Whatever they want to do, I let their creativity soar,” she said. The purpose of the class, offered through Mattapoisett Recreation, is that, “they learn the basics of theater while having fun and doing your own thing.”

The student’s production of Hairspray is today at 5 p.m at Center School’s gymnatorium.
