Lasting legacies beyond the field

MATTAPOISETT — At this year’s Field Hockey Banquet, the organizers didn’t just honor the players, they also recognized long-time Old Rochester Varsity Field Hockey Coach Polly Lawrence on Nov. 13 by creating a service award in her name.

“Polly’s impact on the ORR field hockey program speaks volumes,” said current coach, Lauren O’Brien. “She inspired others around her to find their passion, give their time, and find ways to integrate their interests and skills with the needs of others in mind.”

Lawrence led the field hockey team at Old Rochester for 41 years. O’Brien played for Lawrence as a student from 2006 to 2009, and succeeded her as coach this summer. However she wanted to recognize the coach at this year’s banquet because her summer retirement did not give the team a chance to recognize her.

“I was honored to have Polly Perkins Lawrence at my first banquet as head coach and to honor her commitment and service with the implementation of The Lawrence Legacy Award,” O’Brien said.

The first recipient of the award was sophomore Carly Drew, who won it for her commitment to service in the community.
