Learn about Herman Melville and Edna St. Vincent Millay at Mattapoisett Library
The public is invited to a free lecture on two of New England's literary greats – authors and poets Herman Melville and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Peter Bergman, director of the Berkshire Historical Society at Melville’s farm, Arrowhead, in Pittsfield, will lead the talk about these uniquely American poets/authors at the Mattapoisett Library on Sunday, April 23, from 2-3 p.m.
Melville felt the pull and influence of the Berkshires from his childhood, and his years at Arrowhead were among his most prolific. Millay’s time at Steepletop, in nearby Austerlitz, New York, were strong and active years for her as well.
A close examination points to some mystical connections between them: Both led remarkably similar lives with similar careers. A reception will follow the presentation.
The event is sponsored by Friends of the Library. The library is located at 7 Barstow St. and is handicapped accessible.
