Less than 1 percent without power as of Thursday

Five days after a snowstorm walloped the South Coast, NSTAR has restored power to all but 10 of its customers in Mattapoisett and Rochester.

By Thursday morning, NSTAR reported that less than one percent of its Mattapoisett and Rochester customers were still without power. Power had been restored in Marion by Tuesday night, according to NSTAR.

NSTAR officials say power should be restored by Thursday night.

Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee said crews have been working hard to restore power and clear roads.

"We have a section of Alley Road with five or six poles with the primaries ripped right off of them," said Magee. "We have a lot of damage to the system and that's what's causing the long delay. You can't just turn everything on."

By Saturday morning, NSTAR reported that 8,868 of its customers in the three towns had lost power, including 97 percent in Marion, 99 percent in Mattapoisett, and 94 percent in Rochester.

The primary power circuit for the area was damaged during the storm causing delays with getting the power restored, said Marion Police Chief Lincoln Miller.

The storm downed several trees and power lines in the three towns prompting officials to close off some roads. But by Sunday, Miller said, "Most everything is passable."

Officials from the three towns responded to several medical calls in town and a few small fires that broke out due to downed power lines.

"For a while we were taxing resources. There were a lot of phone calls. We brought in extra crews and we'll keep working," Miller said.

As for dealing with the aftermath of the storm, Miller cautioned residents not to try to heat their homes with gas ovens and take their time when shoveling the snow.

"It's heavy snow. Be sure to take breaks. Don't overexert yourself," Miller said.

Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency on Friday and banned travel on the roads until 4 p.m. on Saturday.

All three towns opened shelters for residents. The Rochester Council on Aging on Dexter Lane, Mattapoisett's Center School on Barstow Street, and the Sippican School in Marion were all opened by Saturday morning.

All of the shelters remained open until Monday. Rochester was the only shelter to remain open on Tuesday.

The Old Rochester Regional Junior and Senior High Schools, Old Hammondtown, Center School, Rochester Memorial School, Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School, and Tabor Academy were closed on Friday and Monday. Tabor resumed classes on Tuesday. The Old Rochester Regional schools and Old Colony reopened on Wednesday.

Town offices closed at noon on Friday and were closed on Monday.
