Lions Club hosts first Family Fun Festival

The Mattapoisett Lions Club held its first-ever Family Fun Festival at Shipyard Park on Saturday. There were hayrides, apple cider, coloring, a pumpkin patch and a pin the nose on the pumpkin game.

On a weekend where many events are scary hayrides or creepy haunted houses, Lions Club President Kim Ray wanted to give people a more family-friendly option.

“We like to give back,” she said. “We thought we would put together a good family day to enjoy.”

The line for the hayride was long all afternoon and the coloring station was packed full with kids, a turnout that pleased Ray.

“I’m thrilled,” she said. “We have a lot of great volunteers. It turned out really well.”

The hayride’s trailer, hay bales and tractor were all donated to the event, something that Ray wasn’t sure was going to happen.

“It took lots of people to pull this together,” Ray said.

The Lions also had a membership table set up in the hopes of attracting new members.

“Like a lot of organizations over the last five years, our membership has changed,” Lions member Bob Saunders said. “We’re a mature group, and we want new members to grow our population. [Our events] take a lot of work.”

Saunders added that they had been able to get people to sign up at the festival.

The first Family Fun Festival proved to be a success, and Ray hopes it becomes a long-standing tradition.

“I’d like to do it again next year,” she said. “Hopefully it gets bigger and better.”

Other Lions members seemed to agree it’d be fun to do again.

“These kids are a hoot,” Lions member Ray Price said.
